The popular video game, set in a post-apocalyptic United States, is getting a (delayed) sequel, hopefully later this year. While the TV series has also had its release date pushed back, that hasn’t stopped fans from discussing potential casting online.

Ever since the news was released that The Last of Us would be getting a TV show, Kaitlyn Dever has been at the top of several fan-castings for the role of Ellie. Dever starred in both Booksmart and Unbelievable last year, putting her on the public radar. Interviewers asked her what her thoughts on the fan-cast were, and she responded positively. She stated, “I obviously have been seeing the Internet, and I’ve obviously been seeing a lot of [the fan casting] . . . I would absolutely love to do that.”

The Last of Us, besides being a widely successful game, has become more popular even outside the gaming community. The game was recently included as an answer to a question in the popular trivia show Jeopardy. And HBO announcing their plans to adapt the game into a show means that the game has the potential to reach even more potential players. HBO brought Game of Thrones, an already popular fantasy book series, into becoming one of the most well-known modern TV shows.

Dever also said that she was a big fan of The Last of Us, and that she enjoyed playing it with her father. The Last of Us is definitely a game that deserves an adaptation made by people passionate about the original game, and it looks like Dever is one of them. Fans are excited about both the game and the upcoming adapation, even leading one fan to create a mock-up intro sequence for the show.

However, nothing is confirmed yet. While it’s clear that many people believe Dever has the right look and acting chops for the part, the decision will ultimately come down to the producers of the show. Whoever ends up playing Ellie, hopefully she ends up bringing justice to such a great character.

The Last of Us was remastered on July 29, 2014 for the PS4.
